SharePoint 404 error
Audience – Tier 1, Tier 2
Description:
This guide explains the process for handling a 404 error when trying to visit a SharePoint site. Most times this happens because someone deleted the homepage.
Procedure:
- Launch SharePoint admin (SA going forward) and give yourself admin rights to both the site having the issue and any other site (this is temporary and we will remove your rights later (make sure that if the site throwing the 404 error is a teams site (will have a teams logo in SA) that you give yourself rights to another SharePoint site connected to Teams).
- Click on the url to open the site to open it
and then click “Site Contents”
- In the URL bar of the browser copy the part highlighted in yellow:
- Go back to the original site that gave the 404 error and paste the part highlighted in yellow
- The site through the 404 error should now launch, when it does click “Recycle Bin” on the left-hand side
- Look for the item named “Home”, click the circle to the left of it and finally click “Restore”
- Test the original link (the 404 error should now be gone)
- Go back to SA and remove the admin permissions you gave yourself.
Escalation:
If an escalation is necessary, please escalate to Tier 2 as the first POC, if Tier 2 is unavailable please escalate to SME.
